Notes: The following information is from a history of the organ by Robert Glasgow printed in The Trackler, the journal of the Organ Historical Society:

The organ began life as Farrand & Votey Op. 700, a 4-manual 63-stop organ installed in Festival Hall at the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.  At the close of the exhibition, it was purchased by the University of Michigan Musical Society and moved to University Hall; the organ was named the Frieze Memorial Organ in memory of Henry Frieze, first president of the University Musical Society.

By 1910, University Regent Arthur Hill had died and left a very generous gift to the university for an auditorium.  The 4,400-seat auditorium was completed in 1913.  The Frieze Memorial Organ was moved to the new auditorium and rebuilt by Hutchings.

In 1927, Ernest M. Skinner was awarded a contract for a large and mostly new organ.  Opus 664 was dedicated on May 15, 1929.  In 1955, the organ was extensively rebuilt and tonally updated by Aeolian-Skinner as Op. 664-A; it also received a new console at this time.

In 1985, the Solo and Swell shades were changed to open downward, greatly improving their tonal egress and effectiveness.  The zinc facade pipes were stripped, revealing outlines of their original 1893 stenciling and color scheme, which was restored by Ruth Richards, University Sign Painter.  At the same time, non-speaking pipes on either side of the central arrangement and heavy grille cloth were removed, and the original Farrand & Votey configuration was restored.

In September 1990, the Solo, Pedal and Positiv division suffered devastating water damage and were meticulously restored over the next three years by Nelson Barden and Co.  The reed pipes were renovated by David Broome.  SSL combination action replaced the remote units.  During the summer of 1995, an SSL MultiSystem was installed, eliminating the massive console plug.  New manuals (bone) and stop jambs were fitted and the stopknob arrangement was modified to accommodate additional couplers and several EMS pedal borrows, as well as his Pedal Divide.  Finally, the console cabinet was repaired and refinished.
